CHAPTER EIGHT
Maggie stepped into the shower after Brett left for the night. The words of the woman at the restaurant had really bothered her. Was the entire scene a response to their conversation about the body at the lake? She couldnât imagine that anyone had actually heard what they were saying, but she couldnât imagine two grown women interrupting their dinner, either. Not to mention what the other diners had to endure.
She fell into bed with a headache and a desire to punch someone. Maggie was not the punching type, but the desire was still with her the following morning when she woke up to start her day. She had just finished making her coffee when she heard a knock at her door. She rushed through the kitchen to open it, thinking that it might be Jake.
But when she got to the door and opened it, she remembered that Jake had moved into Orsonâs old house. Victor Larabee stood on the other side of her door. âItâs four oâclock in the morning,â she blurted out.
âItâs actually four-thirty,â he said and pushed beyond her into the house.
âHow do you even know where I live?â Maggie asked. âAnd why are you in my house? I havenât invited you in.â
âOh, I thought you just did,â he said. âNo matter. I'm here now. How about that coffee?â
âMr. Larabee, you can leave my house right this minute,â she said. âIt is not okay for you to show up unannounced at four oâclock in the morning.â
âFour-thirty,â Victor corrected.
âFour-thirty, whatever,â she said. âItâs an ungodly hour. You are not invited in. You can come back to my place of business at ten oâclock as we discussed yesterday, and I will be happy to sit down with you and have a cup of coffee and discuss your aunt. Until then, do not show up at my house again.â
âYour lights were on,â he said.
âYes, because I own a donut shop and we tend to get there early to start the day,â Maggie snapped. âThat is not an open invitation for perfect strangers to show up at your door and invite themselves in,â she said.
âBut youâre already up,â Victor said. âWhy canât we talk now?â
âBecause I have things to do. I have to get to work and get things going for the rest of my employees. Have you been living under a rock or something?â Maggie asked. âIs there some reason that you donât understand the way normal life works?â
âI still donât understand why we canât just have a cup of coffee and a quick chat!â His fist came down hard on the table. âThatâs all I wanted, just to talk to you. Whatâs so bad about that?â
âOkay, youâre acting very strange, and youâre starting to scare me,â Maggie said firmly. âI want you to leave my house right now, Victor. Leave and do not show up here again.â
Maggie held the door open for him and waited for him to leave. She could feel her heart beating hard in her chest.
